Jackson's chameleons are native to the African countries, Kenya and Tanzania.

They were introduced to the USA through international pet trade in California (1981), Hawaii (1972), and Florida (2014).

They are considered invasive species to Hawaii and California, but not to Florida and are classified as an exotic species.

In 1988, it was discovered that there are three subspecies native to East Africa.

  1. Jackson's Chameleon, Jackson's Three-horned Chameleon (C. j. jacksonii)

  2. Dwarf Jackson's Chameleon (C. j. merumontanus)

  3. Yellow-crested Jackson's Chameleon (C. j. xantholophus)

Jackson's chameleons are seen as a potential threat, as they are one of the largest predators in the forests, and could cause reduction or extinction of many insects.
